Dave Newman just donated great wooden rulers to this project. Artists help the community.
People are often amazed to find out how many life-changing programs and special projects are done for this community through the Coalition for Compassion and Justice. I believe that Fair Start is one of its crowning projects, because education is such an important antidote to poverty. Last year 870 low-income children were equipped with backpacks and school supplies through Fair Start. Later in the school year, children received coats, gloves, hats and socks as a part of Warm for Winter. These same families were able to get food boxes at Open Door throughout the year. With these needs met, stress in the family is reduced and children are able to focus on learning.
On July 21st, parents desperate to be sure CCJ doesn't run out of the supplies their children need will begin lining up around 6:00 am. We will not open until 10:00 am, but they wait, forming a long winding line that crosses the Methodist Church campus and stretches out along Summit Street. One parent who called to thank us said, "It's an amazing community up here, I tell you. I have three foster children who are honor students this year. This really helps them. Thank you so much."
As we come close to the big day, there are some things we are still quite short of, so I am sharing the list below with a small number of loyal supporters.Of course, we can use any and all school supplies. Please pass this message along to your friends.
If you are able to help, you will be giving a child a vital key to their future. We need supplies by the morning of July 20th.
