Lampwork Fish Beads

Lampwork Fish Bead created using Moretti Glass Rods.

I took my first Lampworking classes from Don McKinney in Glendale, Arizona. He turned me on to the glass fish.

It is fun to wear these fish beads on a leather cord or use it for the focal bead for an off loom bead woven piece.

You will find several of my fish beads showing at Arts Prescott Cooperative Gallery on Historical Whiskey Row in Prescott, Arizona.

My signature is the use of drops at the bottom of my fish. I also love to add water dots on the fins.

Lampwork and Seed Bead Braid - Arts Prescott Located on Whiskey Row - Prescott, Arizona

Here is a series of Lampwork Beads created using Moretti Glass Rods and German Glass Rods.

I Braided thin soft flex with size 11 seed beads and added large lampwork beads as focal beads in the center and on both sides of the necklace.

Using strong bead thread I traveled throughout the braid and came out between the seed beads to create beaded fringe throughout the necklace.

This is yet again another way of creating your own treasure necklace using your bead collection. It is amazing to carry around your memories on a piece of jewelry.

After a few introductions to clay as a young adult, Tom Alward began to pursue ceramics on a serious level in 2002.  Studying and working at a community college propelled him to later enroll at Northern Arizona University (NAU) in 2005, to obtain a BFA in Ceramics.

 

It was in Flagstaff and NAU that Tom learned about many new facets of ceramics.  He quickly became immersed in the exciting and challenging process of wood firing, which ended up revolutionizing his whole perception of the medium.  This new technique allowed him to see the beauty of imperfections, uncertainty, and natural splendor.  Pots could suddenly be transformed, naturally colored and glazed by flame patterns and the build up of melted ash.   It also made him take a deeper look at nature, to up close textures and surfaces, that eventually began to influence his style into a more loose and organic expression.  Being an Arizona native also exposed him to the dramatic and contrasting landscapes of the southwest, which played an obvious roll in his background and inspiration as an artist.

 

Tom went on to learn the importance of working with others in a community, while also completing the design and construction of a wood burning kiln on the NAU campus during his senior year.  After graduating, he was accepted in a residency program in Virginia at the Cub Creek Foundation, where he focused immensely on his work and the incorporation of local clays.  As the second part of a post-graduate research grant he was awarded to continue his studies, Tom traveled overseas and worked with many wood fire artists along Australia’s eastern coast.  This trip became an invaluable experience, which demonstrated real life aspects of studio ceramics and non-academic situations, along with vastly different landscapes, clays, and processes.

 

Thus far, Tom has shown his work in numerous juried shows and solo exhibitions across the country, as well as in Australia.  Being back in Arizona now, Tom Alward aims to continue wood-fired ceramics in contemporary contexts, and anticipates the use of more indigenous clays to bring further meaning and location into our daily lives.  Ultimately, Tom says he is seeking ‘a sense of place’ in his latest work, to reaffirm a connection to natural landscapes and the places we live.

 

 

Brooch - Tony Reynolds Cabochon

This brooch was created using a Tony Reynold's Clay Cabochon.

Tony uses Crystalline Glaze to create such a dramatic look.

I used peyote stitch to encase this cabochon with size 11 seed beads.

The fringe enjoys my lampwork beads and beads from my collection.

German Navy Button and Kahlua Beaded Brooch - Pendant

A German Navy Button!

I created this brooch - Pendant for my sister-in-law in Germany.

This button is encased with a ring which I beaded using Right Angle Weave - Off Loom Bead Weaving. I used size 11 seed beads in a color to accent the Navy Uniform Button and the Lampwork Kahlua Beads, created for the round fringe hanging from the ring.

The seed bead fringe is adorned with Kahlua Beads, Baltic Amber and  a flat round Agate Bead.

This is one of the buttons that Christa's brother Jürgen wore on his Navy Uniform for years during the time the German Navy populated their own Jet Pilot Bases in Northern Germany. Jürgen flew F-104 Starfighter before he retired.

Wood - Rudilated Quartz - Kahlua - Baltic Amber - Pearls - OH THAT KUMIHIMO

This Kumihimo Braid is created using Raw Silk Yarn and adorned with a Wooden Button, Rudilated Quartz, Recycled Kahlua Lampwork Beads, Fresh Water Pearls and Baltic Amber.

Lampwork Focal Bead and Seed bead Loops

This Lampwork Bead is created using black Moretti Glass Rods, Silver Leaf and Copper Wire and then encased in clear glass.

I strung size 8 seed beads and then added size 11 seed beads between in a loop style fringe. 

 

Here is another view of a blue and purple necklace created in the same fashion.  Note that I added larger beads throughout the looped size 11 seed beads. This is a fun necklace to make.

"Roc Day" A Yarn-Spinners Holiday Known as Distaff Day - Jan.7th

"Today is as close as I know of to a yarn-spinners’ holiday. It’s Roc Day, also known as Distaff Day or St. Distaff’s Day — and it was an odd sort of holiday, once upon a time. That is, it really marked the end of the winter holidays in a lot of European traditions: The day when, after the twelve days of Christmas, people went back to work. Specifically, spinners got back to work making yarn to be woven into all the good stuff we like to use in polite society, like linens, clothing, and tablecloths. (Apparently, women didn’t traditionally spin during the Christmas holidays. Sounds a bit like school holidays today."

"The holiday (or un-holiday?) is named after the distaff used to hold fiber near the spinning wheel, a.k.a. the rock, or apparently roc — it’s not just a mythical creature any more! Traditional activities included plowmen setting fire to the unspun flax fiber — how considerate ;) — and women throwing buckets of water at said plowmen as a convenient way of putting out the fire. Funny. (And darn cold, since most of Europe at this time of year isn’t exactly balmy.)"

"A Abundance of Beads" is created useing a braided method and size 11 seed beads.

While braiding I added a large lampwork bead at the center of the necklace and one on each side.This treasure of a necklace enjoys many beaded fringes all throughout the piece, using beads which I have collected throughout the years.

It's always an adventure to find a special object to add as a focal point for one of my brooches.

This small hand carved wooden musician is standing among a bed of beads.

Religious Medallions make great brooches. They are main used in a Rosary or any type of necklace. All of my brooches are created with the pin finding attached vertically which makes it easy to pin it on a Kumihimo Braided Cord and worn as a necklace as well as a brooch.

Bead Fest Philadelphia - Debora Mauser and Melinda Barta Workshops

The Abacus Adjustable Ring created by Debora Mauser is one of many workshops offered during the Bead Fest in Philadelphia.

Debora Mauser writes, "Student will first fuse a fine silver base; then form the ring shape. Weave a delicate wire around a fused and formed base highlighted with seed beads resulting in a unique adjustable kinetic ring. This technique can be used to create a bracelet also". This is a Wire Weaving for all Levels.

Beaded Purse Inspired by "One Bead At A Time"

Visiting The Bead Museum in Glendale, Arizona brings many interesting ideas for future projects. 

Glenda is one of the Museum volunteers and she takes advantage of all of the great classes offered there.  This Bead Quilted purse was created by Glenda and the picture doesn't do it justice.

The beaded strap has a great texture and fits the purse perfectly. Glenda says there are several stitches to learn before you can quilt such a purse. Glenda's purse was inspired by Robin Atkins, beader and author of several great bead books.

Sterling Silver Cross and Melot Recycled Wine Bottle Glass Bead-Prescott's 4th Friday Art Walk

Recycled Merlot Wine Bottle Glass makes unique dark green flamework beads. 

I added a Merlot bead to adorn this sterling silver cross.

The chain is 22 inches in length.

The brooch in the background is created using size 11 seed beads. Right Angle Weave around a wooden circle makes a great encasement for this Faceted Smokey Quartz Bead.

The fringe consists of glass beads, clay beads, fresh water pearls and flamework Chardonnay recycled glass.

Seed Bead and Lampwork Braided Necklace

Size 11 seed beads were used to braid a base for this 24 inch long necklace.

Loops create fringe to attach the lampwork beads. Note the hollow bead on the right which represents a small table lamp. With this treasure necklace you can wear all of your favorite beads from your collecton.

 Gallery Member and head of advertising Linne Thomas writes, "Arts Prescott Cooperative Gallery of 24 local artists at 134 S. Montezuma Street presented a $1,732.72 donation to the Child Haven Crisis Nursery on Wednesday, January 6, 2010. For the past 16 years the gallery has held annual fund raising events every holiday season for a different local charity."

"Child Haven Crisis Nursery is a program under the Arizona Children’s Association that provides crisis placement for infants and children up to the age of 6.  It also provides families with resources for other needs such as clothing, diapers, furniture, family shelter and social service referrals."

  I want to thank all of the local artists who contributed artwork for this fundraising show at Arts Prescott. You all made this show more complete.

Clay Face and Beads

I enjoy adorning clay cabochons.

This face accommodates 5 perfect  fresh water pearls and special beads. They create a great head dress for the face.

The fringe is created using Lampwork beads made with Moretti Glass Rods and I added beads from all over the world throughout the seed beads. I like to use size 11 seed beads for my work.

Patricia Brockert Writes about Her Knitted and Adorned Doll

"My youngest granddaughter is eight years old, and her parents have seen to it that she attends schools that are socially diverse in their makeup.   She's very bright and has been raised without electronic gadgets or the latest commercial fad.  I have not only made her gifts all of her life, I've taught her how to do some simple beadwork, as well as how to knit.  I always ask for input from the grandchildren before I make their gift.   For the past two years, I have let them go through 'Toys To Knit' by Tracy Chapman, and pick out what they would like me to knit for them.   When they decide what they want, they sign the page and date it and write any yarn color ideas that they would like incorporated into the piece.   This book is a keepsake for me and an heirloom for them.   This particular doll is the eighth project that I have made using patterns from 'Toys To Knit'."  

 

 "When I called my granddaughter six months ago and asked her if she would like an African-American doll, she thought it was a wonderful idea.   So I started out by using the basic doll pattern in 'Toys To Knit.'   But, from there on, I let the doll evolve, using my own freestyle knitting and beading techniques.   I special ordered the yarns for the "dreadlocks" from "A Good Yarn," here in Prescott, Arizona.  I used two different shades and added some beads to her hair.  I designed and knitted her dress and adorned it with authentic trade beads.   Her necklace is also authentic trade beads.   Her boots are stitched with size 11 seed beads, using the peyote stitch, and attaching the beadwork to the yarnwork.  I did pico lace around the top and around the bottom of the boots.  Dolly is stuffed with old nylons."  

Blue Nun Recycled Wine Bottle Lampwork Beads - Cotton Kumihimo Braid

This Kumihimo Braid carries Brooch created using a ring of ceramic with a blue vintage German Button in the center.

The Lampwork Beads are created using recycled wine bottle glass from Blue Nun Wine. The seed bead fringe also contains fresh water pearls and a shell often used by the American Indian Jewelry.

The stem joints of several species, notably the jumping cholla (Cylindropuntia fulgida), are very brittle on young stems, readily breaking off when the barbed spines stick to clothing or animal skin as a method of vegetative reproduction. The barbed spines can remain embedded in the skin, causing significant discomfort and sometimes injury."
