"We just got back from Oklahoma as we went there for our future son-in-

music recital. He is getting his Doctorate in Organ Performance.
Since we
were there we went to the Cowboy Museum. Bill loves to watch
the old cowboy
movies so it was right up his alley."
"Needless to say there was also something for me to see that I was interested
in."
Look at the beautiful beading on the clothing that was made. I
was very impressed with all of the fine detail.
If you know anyone that is going through there this would be a perfect
place to go to. They also
have an authentic western town and loads of
photographs and artwork.
I must say it is one of the best museums that I have been to. I hope that you enjoy the pictures.

Kuchi Coil - One of my favorite adornments.
Cut 8 1/2 inches of 18g wire. Cut 28 inches of 20 or 22 g wire.
Find the middle of the 18 g wire, begin winding the 20 or 22g wire around the 18g wire making sure that the wire you are winding remains straight side by side with each turn. Continue until the wire is wound around totally and turn the 18 g around to continue the winding of the smaller wire on the opposite side. Please remember to wind the wire going away from your body.
After your 18g wire is complete begin winding the 18g wire around with the round nose pliers. Continue to do this and as you wind you will meet the wound wire. Continue to wind with the encased wire until all of the wire is wound into a bead. This is the Kuchi Coil. You can cut the ends of the wire as short as you please and then run a 16 g wire through the Kuchi Bead and make your connections. At that time you can twist the Kuchi Coil the opposite direction to get the rounded look to the bead. You can make your own recipes for this bead. Vary the length of the 18 g wire and double the small wire to create your own size of Kuchi Bead. Use various colors of wire.
Small Kuchi Coil: 7 inches of 22 g and 19 inches in 24 g
Medium Kuchi Coil: 6 inches 18g and 18 inches of 20g
Large Kuchi Coil: 14 inches of 16g and 83 inches of 22g
Ear Ring Kuchi Coil:
18 inches of 20 g and 6 inches of 18g.
I use the Kuchi Coil in many of my Lampwork and Off Loom Bead Weaving Brooches found at Arts Prescott Cooperative Gallery -- www.artsprescott.com

Hello! I hope your summer is going well so far. As much as I hate to even think about September during July (the kid in me dreading vacations end and schools arrival) I did want to let you know that there are still some booths and artisan tables available at THE FALL TUCSON BEST BEAD SHOW, September 11-13, 2009 (set up 9/10/09).
We are offering numerous classes,
which can be viewed at Best
Bead Show Classes, and have also paired up with the Sonoran Glass Art
Academy and Beads of Courage to present Bead Inspired, a bead making
marathon benefiting children coping with cancer and other serious illness. Part
of Bead Inspired will include a Flame Off, open to 18 flame workers on Friday
& Saturday, 9/11 & 9/12. (Lampwork artists interested in participating
can contact Alex Berger at 520-884-7814 or [email protected]).
After
conversations with the previous owners and several exhibitors, it was
unanimously felt that the event should be moved from the Convention Center (last
years location) to the KVCC - Kino Veterans Community Center (familiar
February location for past 4,000 years. OK, maybe closer to 8). Some reasons:
1. The KVCC is located closer to the Holiday Inn/Holidome, home of the G&LW Fall Event, another major Tucson draw, and is also closer to sponsoring hotels The Hampton Inn & Best Western, both offering the special rate of $69/night if code “bestbeadshow†is used and reservation made by August 7th.
2. We will only be using the Main Hall/Lobby, a smaller venue/fewer booths
than last year, which means less competition and more money per exhibitor.
3. The Kino Center has free parking, and it is the better-known, more
familiar home of the Best Bead Show. We had large banners and advertisements at
the February event announcing the new location for the September show, and there
are ads running in major national bead magazines, the Fall Show Guide, website
posts, e-mail blasts, local (Tucson) advertising, and postcard
marketing.
Again, the dates are Thursday Sept. 10th for set up and
open to the public (retail/wholesale) with FREE admission, Fri-Sun, Sept. 11-13,
2009. Contracts can be printed from: Fall
Contract
If mailing your contract with a check for your deposit,
please do so to The Best Bead Show, PO Box 4, Broomall, PA 19008 (please fax a
copy of each first, if possible, so I can secure your location asap). If faxing
with credit card information, please use 610-359-8415. Please don't delay as
space is currently available in good locations, but limited, and contracts must
be received and processed by July 23, 2009 to be included in our Fall Show
Guides exhibitor list. Thank you, and I hope to hear from
you soon!
Sincerely,
The Best Bead Show

Chance to see “head-taking” exhibit at Glendale Bead Museum
“The Measure of a Man in a Head-Taking Land” Exhibit closes July
31
GLENDALE, ARIZ. (July 14, 2009) - Catch a glimpse of a hidden head-taking culture at the Glendale Bead Museum’s exhibit, “The Measure of a Man in a Head-Taking Land: Tribal Adornment of Nagaland India,” closing July 31. The exhibit takes museum visitors on a journey to the remote reaches of northeast India, chronicling the unique cultures and practices of the peoples of Nagaland and showcasing an ornate society, layered with various types of adornment that hold intrinsic and societal importance.
“The Naga exhibit has surprised and engaged our visitors with
their rich culture,” says Executive Director Kelly Norton. “The life of this
tribe has made for an intriguing and unexpected exhibit and we hope everyone
will have a chance to see it before it ends.”
The
Bead Museum will open a stunning new exhibition in mid-September entitled “From
Caves to Castles: If Beads Could Talk.” This exhibition showcases the
incredible, global array of ancient beads from the private collection of The
Bead Museum founder, Gabrielle Liese.
This exhibition covers the time frame from Prehistory (early hominid-caveman) until the end of the Islamic Period (1400 AD) and explores the question of why beads are an important pathway to understanding human culture. From the simple shell beads of early hominids to the complex glass beads of the Islamic era, visitors will experience the bead story from around the globe and through time. Significant events and turning points in history will be explored from the perspective of beads.
The exhibit will use architectural effects like a pyramid, tombs, and archaeological dig, cave art, philosophers and rulers. It will also be presented with humor and interactive whimsy (If this bead could talk-the stories it would tell!)
The Bead Museum is
the first and largest museum in the world dedicated to the collection,
preservation, research, and interpretation of beads and related
artifacts. Its mission is to foster the appreciation and understanding of
the global historical, cultural and artistic significance of beads and related
artifacts by means of collection, documentation, preservation, education and
exhibition. Its goals are to serve as a permanent repository for beads, beaded
art and related books and publications. Housing more than 100,000 beads and
beaded artifacts, The Bead Museum takes visitors on a journey of discovery of various world cultures, history, geography,
anthropology and of course, art. Located at 5754 West Glenn Drive in Glendale,
Arizona, The Bead Museum offers guided tours, beading classes, educational
workshops and an extensive research library. For more information, please call
623-931-2737 or visit online at www.beadmuseumaz.org.

Lampworking with recycled wine bottle glass has been a passion of mine for sometime. Kahlua bottle glass is very popular too.
Shown on the right is a corded necklace with pressed glass adorned with a Vintage German Cabochon and peyote stitch.

Arizona Bead Soup is made up of all of the beads left over for from my many projects through the years. I like to call it a random choice of colors while beading.
The center blue glass cabochon is a vintage German Cabochon from Neu Gablonz, a suburb of Kaufbeuren, in southern Germany.
This piece along with all of my work can be found at Arts Prescott Cooperative Gallery on Historical Whiskey Row in Prescott, Arizona

In May I added information on Penny's Purses, so check on that is you don't have the complete history about this.
Prescott Area Women’s Shelter (PAWS)
“If you need shelter, we’ve got you
covered”
PAWS volunteers recently came
up with a great new program to promote community, "creativity, and empowerment
for the women who stay at our shelter. Penny’s Purses is an opportunity for
volunteers and shelter guests to come together once a week and create
beautifully beaded purses in the spirit of Penny, a former guest at PAWS who
passed away last year. It is also an opportunity for our guests to have a “free
day” where they do not have to leave the shelter at 8am and venture out into
the elements. Guests are encouraged, but not required to help design purses and
will receive gift cards for laundry, gas, taxi, and beauty services in the
area. PAWS and the Penny’s Purses crew are still looking for businesses who are
willing to donate $10 gift cards towards these services. We are also looking
for material donations of costume jewelry, beads, buttons, threat, and needles.
Monetary donations to Penny’s Purses can be made out to PAWS with “Penny’s
purses” in the memo.
The first few weeks of Penny’s
Purses have been a huge success! Our guests have been participating each week,
and so far we have received nothing but positive responses about the project
itself, and the gift cards guests receive.
Anyone who may be interested in helping with beading or creating purses, please contact the shelter to get involved. These purses will be sold to the Prescott community and all the proceeds will go directly back to the shelter and towards gift cards for our guests. Stay tuned for more information about when and where purses will be available for purchase!
Prescott Area Women’s Shelter (PAWS)
PAWS would like to once again thank Lowe’s of Prescott for their continued support for the shelter and its mission. Lowe’s previously donated beautiful laminate flooring for the shelter, and have now agreed to donate a vanity sink for the shelter bathroom.
PAWS Location:
336
N. Rush St. -- Prescott,
AZ -- www.prescottshelter.org
Phone:
928.778.5933 -- E-mail:
[email protected]
"PAWS would also like to thank Soroptomist International of Prescott for their donation of a year’s worth of internet in our community room. Now our guests will have the ability to search for housing, employment, check their email, submit online resumes, and search for other resources they may need ."
Suzanne's Story" "Hello everyone and welcome to PAWS (Prescott Area Women’s Shelter). My name is Suzanne and I was asked to write an article for this newsletter. For starters, a little bit about how I came to PAWS. In August of 2008, in Mesa, AZ, my brother and I were living together in my mobile home. I got behind on my rent and lost my home and we found ourselves both homeless. We had another brother who was up here in Prescott and told us to come up. So no, in Prescott, both my brothers had everything they needed because they are entitled to VA services at the hospital. However, I did not, I was on my own, with my dog, Shadow, living out of my car. I had to get a motel, here and there, for rest, a hot shower, and laundry. I finally went to the police station, as it was getting cold, seeking assistance. It was then that I heard about PAWS."
"I called to inquire about the location and came to talk to a member of the volunteer staff. At this particular time, the shelter was not open, pending installation of cabinets and a few other items left unfinished. (I must say, I was very disappointed). This is where my first real experience came in as calls were made to local motels in the area and I did not leave PAWS until I had shelter."
"PAWS provided me with a hotel for one week hoping that by then they would be open. The weeks passed and I con-tacted PAWS again only to be told they were still not open. I did not know what to do. Again, PAWS provided another week at the hotel and told me to check back." This time when I called they had a bed waiting for me. So I came to PAWS.
It was slow at first, just a few women, some came only for a night, others days. During my lengthy stay here I have witnessed great transformation in the shelter as it was struggling in so many ways. At times, I heard of PAWS closing due to lack of funds, creating panic and fear for the women here. The facility depends solely on donations, in many forms, such as donated food, gift cards, monies, and even local churches have helped us. If something breaks down here, we have to make due until the money is received for repairs.
However bad being homeless is, my friends, PAWS CAN help you. I am sleeping on a warm bed, I get free clothing to wear when something comes through that fits me. A hot shower is a blessing, just to have clean hair can boost ones self esteem. Then, there is the food.. We get plenty to eat as meals are prepared and donated by friends, family, churches, and sometimes even restaurants. The women working here do so because they honestly care about homeless women and volunteer their time. The volunteers are here for our moral support, to make sure we have the things we need, and best of all, they are there for us to talk to when we feel we cannot go on."
:At PAWS, we laugh, we cry, we share. Some homeless women have become very good friends. Others have stayed long enough to be financially able to get their own place. I am fortunate to be part of a program that wants you to succeed no matter what circumstances you are in. They ask nothing of you except that you try to put the past behind you and look forward to a new future."
"PAWS does have house rules we all must follow, and while some dislike this part of being here, the rules are in place to help guide us and provide structure for a daily routine. The shelter still has many needs to fill, and with the summer coming on, we are without an air conditioning unit. We have a few fans, but could use a few more to cool the place down since we have no windows."
"At PAWS, I feel we all get a second chance at life. My “wish” is for PAWS to be able to stay open and continue to provide for the women and children of Prescott. There is a need for this homeless shelter. It has helped me change my perspective as there is always help and hope. I would say to anyone out there needing assistance not to be afraid and to step forward and seek a new life."
Sincerely, Suzanne
Since opening, 13 women from PAWS have successfully found permanent housing.

Traveling has been so much more fun now that I have my Sterling Silver Charm Bracelet. I go on line and check where the Jewelry Shops and Gallery Spots are located along the route of my trips who carry my favorite Charms to add to my bracelet. Each charm creates memories I carry along with me.
I am a lampwork bead maker and I now create Recycled Wine Bottle Beads to fit my latest charm bracelet.
For sometime now I have created Wine Drops which I add to Sterling Silver Chains and name them Rowena's Wine Drops. Here is a small Wine Drop which fits on my Charm Bracelet.
Recycled Wine Bottle Beads which have larger holes fit my bracelet along side the charms.
At Arts Prescott Cooperative Gallery located on Historical Whiskey Row you will find Rowena's Wine Bottle Bead Charms to fit your favorite Bracelet.
