A Booch - A Pendant all into one - Arts Prescott Cooperative Gallery

A Brooch and a Pendant all rolled into one makes for a lot of fun to wear when you want a change.

Most of my brooches are created on a pin base which is attached in a vertical fashion. This makes it easy to pin on a jacket or a chain.

This brooch is attached to a bead sterling silver chain which creates a dramatic piece. You can use the pendant as a brooch and wear the sterling silver chain on it's own if you wish.

The pendant is a vintage button with two abstract looking ducks ready to take flight. The button is adorned with seed beads, Baltic Amber, Chardonnay recycled wine bottle bead along with other smaller glass beads. The focal bead is lampwork created from recycled Kahlua bottle glass which is encased with off-loom bead weaving using peyote stitch and size 11 seed beads.

This Kahlua Brooch is also on a sterling silver bead chain. It is adorned with a Vintage German Button, Fresh Water Pearls and other fun beads.

Don Pierce - Beading On A Loom - The Bead Museum in Glendale, Arizona

Don Pierce is coming to teach at The Bead Museum

This pendant was designed to create a simple showcase for a feature bead. One of the problems with combining large heavy beads with loomwork is how to carry the weight of the feature bead without distorting the loomwork. In this case the loomwork is folded in the vertical plane creating multiple layers for visual interest and physical support.

Local Fiber and Bead Artist Rowena Tank demonstrates the wonderful Roberta Electronic Spinner during the ply process of Spinning.

The Verde Valley Weavers and Spinners invited Rowena to speak about Exotic Fibers and the Roberta Electronic Spinner. The Roberta comes from Wantirna, Melboure, Victoria Australia created by Ertoel Wheels. Rowena ownes one herself and she is always happy to answer any and all questions about the Roberta.

Bead Project Book and Beaded Jewelry - Love That Off Loom Beading

In my case at Arts Prescott Cooperative Gallery on Historical Whiskey Row you will find The Complete Idiot's Guild to Beading Projects along with an array of Off Loom Beading Projects adorned with some of my Lampwork Beads.

The book was written by local author Georgene Lockwood and my Lampwork Fish Mobile is featured in this book. The Mobile starts with copper tubing.

 Here it a Cobalt Blue Seed Bead necklace done with size 11 seed beads with a sterling silver closure.

The focal piece is a lampwork hollow vessel. This necklace was showing at Arts Prescott Cooperative Gallery in the front window and sold that week.

Rowena's Treasure Tails Art Yarn Sold at The Pine Yarn Shop, Pine, Arizona

Treasure Tails....17 strands of yarn each 200 inches and each strand different from the other. Some hand spun and some novelty yarn created an artful hand bag, amulet bag to adorn or just for design purposes.

I started making my Treasure Tails mainly for my Fiber Amulet Bag Kits which are later adorned with beads. Many Fiber Arts began many a project using a Treasure Tail.

The Bead Museum News

As a thank you to our members The Bead Museum will be having its very own trunk show, showcasing selected items from the store for 75% off!   That's right starting next week, Wednesday night. Cindy Meyers Glass Balls Make Shadows on the Art from Münster, Germany

We have a Münster, Germany wall of art.  These are gifts from relatives who still live there. We add to the wall periodically and today I found such wonderful shadows that I decided I would blog about them. Shadows of Cindy Meyers hand-blown glass balls which hand in our window.

Roberta Electronic Spinner Limited Edition - Beautiful Spinner

The Limited Edition Roberta Electronic Spinning Wheel is a real treasure.  The light wood is selected special for the Ertoel Roberta Spinning Wheel.

Note the Mouse Pad on the bed of Roberta, which is to protect her beautiful wood from scratches during use. Sometimes while changing bobbins or adding Ertoel Oil to the shaft of the flyer you could drop the flyer on the bed of Roberta. That only happens if you have a dropsy day and the Mouse Pad is there to catch it.

As you see, I have a colorful photo of Hand Spun Yarn in my Mouse Pad. What a great way to personalize your Roberta, Limited or Not.

Snow in Prescott - More Time For Beads

 I am shoveling snow after waking up to even more snow today. Last night I shoveled about 10 inches and over night it snowed even more. Imagine how much I would have had to shovel this morning had I not cleared the driveway last night.

The right photo is taken from my front side walk. Oh what fun ... A SNOW DAY...

Talked to my sister Pat this morning and they have so much snow up the mountain that trees are down. It will be a while before they dig out of all of that white stuff. Good thing they are always well prepared for everything.

Shoveling snow and making small mountains around the trees in the yard makes for free water for a few weeks. The trees are happy and our water bill too.

Here you see one of McCall's Paper Dolls. This brings back memories of cutting Betsy and her dresses out of the magazine and collecting them myself. A Kahlua Cuff "Loves Kahlua" Peyote Stitch Cuff at Arts Prescott

I finally got around to making a Peyote Stitch Cuff with a Lampwork Recycled Kahlua Bottle Piece. This Kahlua Piece is adorned with agate, citrine, and amber beads.

The cuff closure is actually two vintage glass German Buttons that I found during a trip to Germany in a town near Munich. They were in a bag in the cellar of a bead shop and the find was like gold.

This cuff along with all of my work can be found at Arts Prescott Cooperative Gallery on Historical Whiskey Row in Prescott, Arizona.

Here are several glass pendants on sterling silver wires. The pendants are created using recycled Kahlua Bottle Glass as well as many other wine bottles.

Looking Back to a class with Judith MacKenzie McCune and Spinning at The Winery

I just got a call from Kentucky asking about spinning, spinning wheels, learning more about spinning. I explained how I really learned how to spin and took it a step further. Talking about the first Spinning at the Winery at the Retzlauf Winery in California... it brought back memories I wanted to share with you once again.

A Trip and class from Judith MacKenzie-McCuin: Living in Prescott gives me all of the opportunities to spin with beads and learn new things about fiber This summer Rowena traveled with fellow bead artist Glenda Campbell to the San Francisco area and stayed with Kate and Will Taylor.
             Kate and Will are both spinners and weavers both very active in the San Francisco guilds. It was Fiber and bead talk all day along with short trips around the area.
            The main reason for the trip was two great work shops given by Judith MacKenzie-McCuin, famous spinner of our time. Judith traveled from Montana to teach Spinning for Socks which was organized by Morgaine of Carolina Homespun and then Color and Spinning at the home of Will and Kate Taylor.
            Both classes were so extensive that it would take a book to tell you about all we learned in just two. It’s always interesting to remember all of the great people you meet taking these classes. It is like spinners coming together and the room sizzles with fiber, beads and ideas. If anyone is at a fiber convention and Judith is teaching don’t pass that up.
            Judith’s Spinning With Beads class is awesome and it was written up in many magazines like Spin Off.Judith’s knowledge on wild fiber is shared in her video and DVD’s of spinning of “Spinning Exotic Fibers and Novelty Yarns” is well worth the money and her classes enhance what you learn in her video. Also, during the class at the Taylor’s home, Judith taught an afternoon of dyeing with her own “Mother Mac Kenzie’s Dye Kit” It was so simple and the colors were so vibrant that you come away wanting to hit the dye pot immediately. Mohair was also not left out of the mix. Spinning and plying Mohair and then to dye it in the afternoon makes for a skein of art!
            Being a bead maker myself makes me appreciate Judith’s colors and what happens when you mix them to create your own design of choice. During those 2 weeks where Judith shared much of her knowledge one event will remain in my mind for a long time to come.
            Each year Kate and Will Taylor arrange for all of the spinners in the area to come together at the Retzlaff Winery for a Spin In. Kate and Will work very hard to set up the tables and the whole area for vendors to have space. There are spinners in a great circle which ends up being clusters, and we all just enjoy the day and the wine. The food table is unbelievable in itself. Each fiber artist brings the best food dish and you see the artist come out even in the food they bring. Tables of fleeces and mohair piled high or hanging from every hook makes for a sight to see.
            This adventure was written up in our local newspaper The Courier. If anyone has seen it any where else please leave a comment where you read about it....What an experience to remember!

A Freeform Felted Handbag Created by Tubac Artist Kim Keast

During the meeting with the Southwest Fiber Arts Guild Kim Keast showcased her Freeform Felting. OH MY!

Deborah Brunner writes, "Kim Keast, she has a studio and lives in Tubac, AZ.  Kim is a multi-medium artist with a focus on encaustic art and collage.  Kim's latest venture into the fiber arts is freeform knit and crochet which she
has embraced passionately.  Her freeform pieces are taken a step further by felting, resulting in an organic, sculptural quality."

The Bead Museum - Diane Fitzgerald - Jean Cambell - Seed Bead Art

Diane Fitzgerald will be teaching at The Bead Museum February 7 & 8, 2009.
Enjoy learning the Celtic Trefoil Pin/Pendant and the Pointed Oval Links.

Classes run from 11am to 5pm and the charge is $95.

I learned much of my seed bead art taking classes at The Bead Museum in Glendale, Arizona. Check to see if there is still room for you to join in on the fun.
The Celtic Trefoil: In the class, students will learn to make Pointed Oval Links which may be used for a bracelet or earrings and the Celtic Trefoil Pin or Pendant, an ancient symbol representing an interwoven knot. The pin is about 2" wide. Both are made with peyote stitch using cylinder beads.

Chandelier Pendant: Using cylinder beads, this pendant is made with four elongated triangles for the sides and a slightly domed square at the bottom. Nailheads are added to the sides and bottom as embellishments. The pendant is about 1 1/2" long.

This intermediate class introduces a basic sculptural peyote-stitched button shape, then helps students explore the shape’s possibilities, experimenting with seed bead size, color, pattern, and embellishment. Beaders will learn how to connect the shapes to make larger organic shapes as shown in the necklace here.

Le Cirque Bracelet

This intermediate free-form project is a great way to get outside the box. It employs peyote stitch, netting, and wirework. The design was inspired by Seurat’s Impressionist painting, Le Cirque, and it made with a potpourri of seed and accent beads, crystals, pressed-glass, and sterling silver. This piece appears in Jean’s recent book, Beadwork Inspired by Art: Impressionism. Students will learn the basic beadwork construction so they can finish the project at home.

The brown colored glass of the Kahlua Bottle makes wonderful beads. Here is a lampwork Pendant piece used to create a brooch. All of my brooches are made that you can slip a chain through the pin at the back and wear it as a pendant as well.
