Red is for the season, actually, for me it is for any season.
"Red" is a fiber necklace which is adorned with beads, buttons, ribbons and charms.
Much of the fiber was hand spun by me and the vintage buttons were found mostly in Europe. The round white buttons are rare white milk glass buttons from Germany.
The fun making this necklace is in the fringe. I use the fringe twister found on my web store and then adorn each cord with seed beads and larger beads or buttons on the end of each cord.
The braid is created using the loop method and I sew seed beads throughout each part of the braid as I add larger beads and buttons.
The connection is in the front behind the large recycled lampwork glass pendant. It consists of a magnet closure used on felted purses.

Prescott Seed Bead Artist Jan Anderson Does Well in Bead Museum in Washington D.C.
Jan Anderson, a local
beadwork designer, has taken second place in the first International Juried
Jewelry Design Competition, “Celebrating Beads, the journey of…..” at the Bead
Museum Washington, D.C. Her entry shown
here won in the seed bead category of the competition and will be on display at
the museum from now through December 31, 2008.
Her piece titled “Time is a
Perception” is a series of three 3-dimensional faces embellished unto bead
covered “hand mirrors”. They reflect the same woman progressing through the
different ages of her life – from youth, into the prime of life, and then
aged. The last item in the display is a
vintage hand mirror in which the viewer is presented with her/his own
reflection. The faces are beaded with a
combination of peyote stitch and right angle weave, using size 15 Japanese seed
beads.
Jan completed NanC Meinhardt’s Master Class Project in 2007. Her work has been shown at the San Luis Obispo Art Center and at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft. Her jewelry and wearable art is sold in galleries in Arizona and Montana.

Recycled Wine Bottle Art - "Loves Chardonnay"
Over the holidays I did a lot of cooking and lampwork beads, of course.
"Loves Chardonnay" is created using Chardonnay recycled wine bottle glass for my lampworking and then Off-Loom Bead Weaving throughout my abstract lampwork beads.
The closure is made of sterling silver.
I began with the pendant and added each bead using size 11 seed beads.
At Arts Prescott you will find a glass treasure chest full of loose lampwork beads created from recycled wine bottle glass and Italian Glass.

Alfredo Conde and Sherry Curtis at Arts Prescott Appreciate Arizona's Grand Canyon with Their Photos
Photography is painting with light. It is stalking the light. As fine art photographers we deliberately try to capture extraordinary and rare moments... In a world where manipulation of imagery has become the rule, our only legitimacy is to maintain the originality and authenticity of the work. By not using enhancing props, each photograph is individually handmade from the original slide. What you see in the work is a moment of light that actually existed.
A photograph ultimately is a document. We feel our work on the Grand Canyon documents the light, the mood, the spirit, and the magnificence of this sacred place. It is our most sincere desire that these images will bring you closer to the core element of nature.
Photography's essence is in the conviction that the captured image is the recorded presence of the spirit. When looking through the viewfinder of a camera, we see a framed description of the world. To bypass this condition, one must look inwardly and ask for the subject's permission. This may be a rock, a cloud, or a person's eyes; only then the non-judgemental viewer can accomplish the work properly. If a person wants to learn about photography, one must first unlearn what they may think photography is. In photography, like in life, we can live by the rule of the "snapshot" to elucidate and construct reality from a blurred image. Fine art photography takes away this dialogue from the superficial, and brings it to the interaction between the ethereal and the magnificent with a clear vision.
Our original photographs are of the highest quality. The photographs are archivally mounted and matted using museum quality materials.

Don Rantz - Prescott, Arizona Landscape Artist
Don Rantz has been enthusiastically painting in pastels since 2002. He
spends most of his of time painting in the plein air style–painting
from life in the great outdoors. A large number of his works are
created this way and are completely finished in the wild. He also
takes his field studies and makes studio paintings, using them as his
guide.
An Arizonan since 1959, Don studied fine art at Northern Arizona
University. In addition to his pastels, Don also has collaborated with
his wife, Beth Neely, in illustrating three highly popular children's
books, and has, over the years, created a number of finely crafted
wooden sculpture and furniture pieces. He and Beth reside in a 1919
bungalow in Prescott, Arizona, with their two cats and an assortment of
visiting wildlife.
Don
has received many awards for his pastels in recent years. He won
Pastel awards at the prestigious Phippen Museum Art Show and Sale in
both 2006 and 2007. From out of over 4000 entries, he won the Ruth
Richeson award in the Pastel Journal’s
Pastel 100 competition in 2006 and Honorable mention in the same
competition in 2007. He won second place overall in the New Mexico
Pastel Society National Show in 2007.
Don writes, "Pastel crayons are created by mixing pure pigments with just enough binder to hold them together. They are the most archival and light fast of any painting medium. There are few if any, additives to fade or yellow with age. The only drawback to pastel is the fact that it never dries or sets up. It must be framed under glass. If a pastel is painted on paper with insufficient 'tooth', the pastel can start to fall off over along period of time or is they are roughly handled. With this in mind, all of Don's paintings are created on Wallis Pastel Paper, an archival sanded paper that will resist this falloff better than any other paper he has found."
"Pastels are more often used in a scribbly, pencil like manner, and are usually thought of as a drawing medium, and are often blended together into a sometimes overly soft picture. It is possible, though, to handle them in a brush-like manner to create works that are similar in appearance to oil paintings. These works may, however, possess more vibrancy and color intensity than oils, because pastels cannot be mixed together like liquid paints".

Abstract Lampwork Beads for Seed Bead Artists by Rowena Tank
Off Loom Bead Weaving is at the top of my list when it comes to creating with beads.
The artist begins with one bead and a world of imagination and creativity develops one seed bead at a time.
I create lampwork beads with the seed bead artist in mind. Each piece has the standard bead holes and many other opening for off loom bead weaving.
One lampwork bead can become a huge pendant or a small one depending on what you want to make out of it. Branch Stitch is a unique way to make the lampwork your own design. The bead appears as though you have a fluff of seed beads extruding from it.
Here is a lampwork bead created from recycled Kahlua Glass.
I call these types of lampwork abstract bead work.
I often have glass dots or eyes on each of these fun beads. In ancient times Middle Eastern Countries wore eye beads to ward off evil or unpleasantness.
As a seed bead artist I can image a list of ways to adorn this bead.

Raina Gentry was born and raised in Southern California. As a young adult, in 1990, she
moved to Arizona to
attend Prescott College where she earned a BA degree in
Environmental
Philosophy. After graduating she made her living doing odd
jobs, and as an outdoor guide for several adventure
companies in Arizona,
eventually going back to Prescott College to teach rock climbing courses for
many years.
"Art had always been a part of Raina’s life, and she had
often dreamed of becoming an artist, but she was reluctant to fully commit to
her artwork because of typical fears ...", writes Raina.

Mary Kaye O'Neill Creates Sterling Silver Jewelry Different From All Others
Mary Kaye
O’Neill loves the
outdoors. Her fantasy as a child was to have a job where her dog
got to go to work with her. She was less clear about what it was
she wanted to be doing.
She has spent time as a secretary (like her Mom!), an elementary school teacher, a legislative assistant to a U. S. Congressman, a career counselor, a massage therapist, and now, FINALLY, as a JEWELER!
She is inspired by the natural textures found in nature,
by line and by color. “My customers are my best teachers; they’re
always giving me ideas for my jewelry.” Besides them, she has
studied at Yavapai College (with Bill Ford, Dick Marcuson, Chelsea Stone, Keith
Horst) and also went to Penland School of Arts and Crafts and studied briefly
with Tom McCarthy. She now shows her work at the Arts
Prescott Cooperative Gallery.

Melody McConaughy - Reclaimed- Recycled Art Works at Arts Prescott Cooperative Gallery
Melody McConaughy creates one-of-a-kind sculptural works, crafted from her personal collection of materials found all over the countryside. She uses wood, beads, spoons and forks as well as so many other objects to create her art.
Classically-trained and well-loved as a teacher and school administrator, Melody stopped the classroom to envision the objects percolating from her active mind and assemble from her storehouse of amazing and wondrous bounty hidden in the hills of Prescott for a time. She is now back teaching Art Class at Skyview School. She brings the students not only her ideas of what is art, she also encouraged them to think outside the box. Recently, she headed up a movement to create adorned mirrors for the Arts Prescott Cooperative Gallery in her class room of students.
Melody talks about "Keeping The West Alive", by reclaimed, recycled, reinvented, recreated: the playful artworks of Melody McConaughy are
brashly expressive in the authenticity of their materials.

Carolyn Peterson-Engaging Multimedia Painting & Printmaking
Carolyn Peterson is a long time member of Arts Prescott Cooperative Gallery in Prescott, Arizona located on Historical Whiskey Row.
Carolyn is an artist with an eclectic vision of the past and the present, which is expressed through painting and printmaking. Over a period of time, themes have become apparent. "The incredible beauty of the Southwest becomes evident in 'plain air' landscapes in oil and watercolor. Love of water and riparian habitats inspire gyotaku fish prints and an ongoing series of frog montotypes. Expressing the moods of people via drawings from life in pastel and painting an abstract style make for some very pleasant day", writes Carolyn Peterson.

Carolyn explains printmaking with, "There are several kinds of printmaking you can do yourself without a copier or a press. Let's consider original art prints and not reproductive image making. Artist(including
Warhol, Rembrandt and Degas) have produced
'one of a kind' prints. You have seen many contemporary works but probably did not recognize them as such."
It's always special to get a greeting card which was produced by a local artist.

Here is just a few of what Carolyn offers. Of course, I must admit that "Bachelor Frog" shown on the left is one of my favorites. I was lucky enough to have sold the original painting when Carolyn first brought it in the gallery. A real bachelor purchased this painting for himself.

Basket Maker Michelle Burres-Veatch - Spinner and Weaver
Baskets have been a part of Michelle Veatch's life since the Girl Scouts years.
After discovering weaving in 1977 while taking art classes she went on to spinning. With practice of these two combined arts her baskets became more ornate while using many natural materials.
Michelle writes, "I love making containers that hold things or nothing at all. I have sheep, llamas and a goat; many of my yarns us their fibers and are named for them. I dye most of my fibers and basket reeds."
Here Michelle used Snake Skin to create this one-of-a-kind basket.
Michelle writes, Sometimes I will find an interesting stick or vine on a walk. I let it lay around where I can see it and an idea comes to me. My ideas come when I'm driving, showering and often in dreams. My style is casual; rather than forcing the wild materials to bend to my ideas of how it should be designed, I let the materials dictate how the basket will look. A lot of my baskets come from the thought 'What will happen if I try this?' ".
"Centuries of basket makers all over the world and Ed Rossbach who took a new look at basketry in the 60's and 70's influenced my work".
"I am working on projects currently working in spinning and baskets reminiscent of the funeral platforms in the Northwest."
"My studio and/or work environment depends on the weather. In the winter I work inside, in warm weather I work outside on the deck or in the yard."

Michelle Veatch received a Juror's award for a basket at the Schemer Museum in Phoenix at a show featuring international basket weavers.

Rowena Tank at Arts Prescott - Lampwork Beads for the Seed Bead Artist - Bead Art
Kahlua Recycle Bottle glass is what I used to create these special Lampwork Beads. A lot of these Lampwork beads are created for the Seed Bead Artist. They have bumps and crevices to create great off loom bead weaving off opportunities. Each piece has its own character and just wearing it on a chain is fun too.
I have been a member of Arts Prescott Cooperative Gallery since 2003 and I have seen many changes in the gallery throughout the years. It is a pleasure to show my beads and my bead work on Prescott's Historical Whiskey Row.
Working with seed beads has be an adventure for me. Size 11 seed beads have been a favorite of mine and I am always happy to find vintage seed beads to work with. During all my trips I am I always dropping into a local bead shop to see what is waiting for me there.
This Off Loom Bead Weaving project was started during the Seed Bead Masters Class taught my NanC Meinhardt several years ago.
This was my first seed bead project and you can see it at Arts Prescott Cooperative Gallery. You will find some fun Arizona Sun Flake Lampwork beads under some of the Right Angle Weave ruffles. This was a fun piece to Complete.
If you have visited the gallery you have seen my MANY BROOCH collection. I find fun, vintage and one-of-a-kind buttons to use on most of my pieces. I begin with a Lampwork Bead or a Vintage Button and take off using seed beads to create a brooch you can wear on a sweater or suit and at the same time slip it through a chain and wear it as a pendant.

Prescott's Own Beth Neely
This year has been an exciting year for Arts Prescott Cooperative Gallery. We have several new members which have brought much fun in the gallery. Members who work hard for the good of the gallery and local art recognition. Beth Neely is one of those new artists. Her work makes everyone smile.
Beth and her husband Don Rantz illustrated these two childrens books.

at all levels, from elementary school to Elderhostel. She is
currently an adjunct faculty member of
Yavapai College. She has been a full time artist since 1981. She is very proud of being a founding member
in Arts Prescott Cooperative Gallery.
She has exhibited widely throughout the Southwest and Midwest and has
won numerous awards. Her work is in collections throughout the United States,
Canada, England, France and Japan. A
large triptych of Linne’s was included in an exhibition at the Phoenix Sky
Harbor International Airport. Her work
is currently in galleries in Prescott and Scottsdale.

Robert Hughes Clay Art - Kiote Clay Pottery - Prescott, Arizona
Robert Hughes joined the membership of Arts Prescott Cooperative Gallery this year. His huge platters and vases are artfully unique.
Kiote Clay Pottery is what Robert calls his Clay Art Business.
Robert Hughes was born in Southern California and was first interested in ceramics as an art form in high school. He continued his education in college where he studied commercial art design, sculpture, ceramics, photography and jewelry.
After college Robert worked in several ceramic
studios throwing production pottery.
In 1991 Robert moved to Bullhead City, AZ and created Kiote Clay Pottery to explore ceramics as an art form. In 2003, he moved to Prescott, AZ where he lives on 6 acres with cats, dogs, and chickens. Aside from working in his studio, he enjoys gardening, hiking, boating and playing music with friends.
Today he creates both functional and decorative art pieces. You can see his work at various juried art shows and galleries across the southwest. Locally, he is a member of Arts Prescott, a cooperative gallery, 134 South Montezuma Street in Prescott, Arizona.
Robert writes, “ I design all of my own glazes and use a variety of decorating techniques that I have learned over the years. These include overglaze decoration, matte glazing, sgraffito, wax resist, carving and incising. I also work with sagger fired pieces.”

Randy Shackleford aka Bubba - Jewelrer
Randy Shackleford is well known for his heavy sterling silver cuff bracelets. Recently, he had turned to creating pendants depicting symbols, some religious, and some just artful creations.
This wooden cross was created by Bubba and it hangs at my house. It is adorned by a copper bird and each time the sun shine through the door the bird glows from its rays.

Michelle Johnson - Weaver - Felter - Fiber Artist
Michelle Johnson is a long time member of Arts Prescott Cooperative Gallery. The gallery is in its fifteenth year in Prescott, Arizona and it is now located on Historical Whiskey Row.
Many have visited the gallery and left with one of Michelle's infamous V-Wraps... woven and adorned with novelty yarn. I have 2 myself. Michelle's weaving inspired me to learn to weave.

Ornaments by Janet Childress at Arts Prescott
Prescott Clay Artist, Janet Childress, is one of the original members of Arts Prescott Cooperative Gallery. The Gallery is in it's 15th year.
Janet has an array of clay art at the gallery. Her round and heart shaped clay pie pans are colorful and fun. Janet uses her love for animals to inspire some of her work. If you love horses you need to drop by Arts Prescott and see Janet's small sculptures of horses.

Brenda Behrens - Wood Turning and Carving at Arts Prescott Cooperative Gallery
Behrens
developed a love for woodcraft as a young girl playing in her father's
cabinet-making shop. She learned woodcarving from a village carver
while living in Japan in the early 1960s.
The Prescott Daily Courier writes, "I learned to carve
with the Japanese traditional hand push tools," she said while seated
at a workbench in her Chino Valley studio.
Hand tools led her to
power tools and a life-long passion for woodcarving. From a single
piece of wood Behrens carves vessels, pots, pet urns, hair sticks,
scoops and "little doo-dahs." Her current passion is Welsh love spoons
carved with her signature twisted-leaf forms.
"Back in the old days, a Welshman would carve a love spoon for the woman he intended to propose to," she explained.
Behrens
starts with a single block of wet wood - usually basswood - for vessels
and smaller pieces and uses layered laminated wood for larger pieces.
Wet wood carves more easily than dry wood, she explained.
"The
first step is thinking of the plan or concept for the piece," she said.
"Then I choose the size of the block and the type of wood I want to
use."

Patricia Blevins Sequins and Bead Art Work
Patricia Blevins was raised in the Catholic Church and always found its symbols powerful.
"I love costuming and Halloween is my favorite holiday. I take great joy in the way a costume pitches you out of your normal persona", writes Patricia.
Pat's beaded sequin designs are created for fun jackets. These designs will pull you right out of the crowd and at the same time they are fun to wear.
Sequins are ornamental, shiny disks which are used for adornment. Many call the adornment a type of applique or embroidered applique.
Patricia continues, "As a teenager I painted and drew, and loved art in all it's forms. I am a mostly taught seamstress and have helped professional and a mature alike when they needed a costume."
Absolute Astronomy.com explains that "Sequins are disk-shaped beads used for decorative purposes. They are
available in a wide variety of colors and geometrical shapes. Sequins are
commonly used on Clothing."
Continued, "Clothing is defined, in its broadest sense, as coverings
for the torso and limbs as well as coverings for the hands , feet, jewelry, and other accessories. Large sequins,
fastened only at the top, have been used on billboards and other signage,
particularly prior to the development of lighted neon sign.
Although coins are still used as sequins in some cultures,
modern sequins tend to be made of plastics. Plastic covers a range of synthetic or semi-synthetic
polymerization products. They may also be referred to as
spangles, paillettes, or diamantes. Paillettes themselves are commonly very
large and flat. Sequins may be stitched flat to the fabric, so that they do not
move, and are less likely to fall off; or they may be stitched at only one
point, so that they dangle
and move easily, to catch more light. Some sequins
are made with facets.
In the History of Beads the All Seeing Eye is a very important bead. The wearer deflects evil thoughts and actions.

Pat writes, "While working on costumes for the living folklore clowns I was introduced to the New Orleans tradition of Bead Patches made by Allison "Tootie" Montana, Peace Keeper Chief of the Mardi Gras Indians. It was love at first sight".

Starting today I will be showing all of the work showing at Arts Prescott....all through until Christmas.
