Workshop: Judging Hand Spun Yarns in Tucson, Arizona

Announcing a special workshop to be held Dec. 5-6-7, 2008

STANDARDIZING THE JUDGING OF HANDSPUN YARNS

 The Tucson Handweavers & Spinners Guild of Tucson is sponsoring this workshop.  They are cordially inviting interested spinners from all over the Southwest to participate in this innovative workshop being taught by Karen Goodson of Cataldo, Idaho.

Karen is the current chairperson of NwRSA Judging and Standards committee.  After several years of working and planning, the Northwest Regional Spinners have developed standardization for judging handspun.  Hopefully this will spread across the United States so there is some quality and consistency in judging handspun yarn.  Karen has been teaching this Judging Seminar for the past couple years to spinners all over the Northwest.  Now we are looking forward to having her teach us here in the Southwest. 

 This workshop is for spinners who are interested in becoming qualified judges or just want to improve their spinning and presentation for shows.  Participants should have experience with hand spinning and some knowledge of knitting, crocheting, weaving, felting and any other method of using handspun.  Students will be trained to use the judging scorecards for judging at the fairs and conferences. The seminar will include certification requirements, history of judging and standards committee and judging philosophy. Students will have a lot of hands on judging of yarns and items made with handspun yarns so they begin feeling comfortable about making good judging decisions.

This three-day workshop will run from 9am to 4pm with an hour lunch break.  Students must bring handspun yarn ready to enter into a juried show.  Not all yarns should be perfect but a variety of all levels of spinning quality.  Also Karen asked that you bring a variety of items made from handspun. She will be bringing a suitcase full but your contributions will add to the workshop. 

 Several Tucson Spinners have opened their homes for those from out of town that will be coming to the workshop.  Please note if you would like to stay in one of the homes.
