I love to add Branch Stitch touches to my Lampwork Beaded Pieces. Branch Stitch seems to give the piece a lightness to of adornment.

Amber is another favorite of mine. Baltic Amber accents Kahlua Bottle Lampworked Beads.

Fresh Water Pearls adorn the back side of the pendant, which is the focal point of this necklace. Hollow beads and my Arizona Sun Flake Beads create a lighter necklace to wear around your neck.

Now and then I have several Arizona Sun Flake Lampwork Beads in my loose bead collection case at Arts Prescott. These beads are mainly for the seed bead artists. Adding Off Loom Bead Weaving throughout an Arizona Sun Flake can create a one-of-a-kind beaded necklace.

Last night a group of Fiber Artists hosted the reception to celebrate the Fiber Art Show, "Sisterhood of Spinning Tales".

A trip to Canyon de Chelley sparked Anne Martson's interest in fiber arts four years ago.

"Seeing the Navajo weavings stirred something within me, even though it's not the style I weave now," the Prescott Valley resident said.

Marston and seven other fiber artists are currently showing their handspun weavings and artwork at the Arts Prescott Cooperative Gallery, Prescott, in a show called "Sisterhood of Spinning Tales." The artists reception is tonight from 6-8 p.m. during the Fourth Friday Artwalk.

Our Local Newspapers support our Fiber Art and all Art here in the area. Without them no one would know about our galleries, guilds, clubs and all art events.

Pam Stowe created this intriguing seed bead project. This is part of the Tentacle and Eye, which will be incorporated into a purse.

Pam is part of a group which formed from the 13th Masters Class of NanC Meinhardt. NanC helps the seed bead artist find their muse.

I would like to see this purse when Pam is finished.

"Our group, now that we have survived being the 13th Master Class, is called Vista Point Artists.  We all meet once a quarter, and those who can make it, join a monthly meeting when they can.  We have been to Jan's twice for a "retreat".  It is always a fun adventure, writes Melanie Schow.

Seed Beading at Jan Anderson's - Master Seed Beaders

Prescott Bead Artist Jan Anderson had a beading weekend here in town.

Jan invited alumni from her Master's Beading Class which was taught by NanC Meinhardt. She invited me to drop by and meet everyone and I am going to share my photos with you over the next day or so.

Jan is working on hands and each hand is making a universal sign. We will have all of the hands photographed after she has her collection finished.

The table is full of bead supplies and everything one needs to work on a project in a group.

Barb Kiger - Prescott, Arizona- Returns from Haystack Mountain School of Crafts

Local Fiber Artist Barb Kiger brought her knowledge and her enthusiasm to the Mountain Spinners and Weavers Guild on Saturday.

Barb just returned from a 2 week experience at the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts.

"The Art and Art Education Program is delighted to offer students the opportunity to attend Haystack Mountain School of Crafts as an extension of their studio work. Two and three week sessions are offered in: Blacksmithing, Clay, Fibers, Glass, Metals, Printmaking, Wood, Painting and Drawing, Fibers and Mixed Media. Set in Maine in a beautiful, architect-designed facility hugging the rugged coastline, the learning experience is like no other. According to doctoral-student Kristen Baxter, who attended during the summer of 2001, "my two week session at Haystack was amazing! One of the best parts of the experience for me was meeting so many artists with such a range of different backgrounds and interests. Another wonderful part of the experience was the unlimited use of the studios. Some of us in the fibers class worked ten hours or more in the studios on some days On other days we went for walks along the Maine coastline or stopped by the art galleries in Deer Island, Stonnington and Blue Hills."

'Students, faculty and visiting artists gather at Haystack each summer to investigate craft in an aesthetic climate than honors tradition while acknowledging the rich potential of contemporary visual art. People come to Haystack to develop skills and nurture the creative spirit; they come to ask questions, reassess their work, and push into the unknown. The combination of an unmatched natural setting, a unique campus designed by Edward Larrabee Barnes, and the focused energy of the school community, provides an environment that supports a serious exploration of craft ideas and imagination." The Mountain Spinners and Weavers were happy that Barb brought all of her Woven Shibori samples to the meeting. Barb spoke extensively about the process and the Haystack Mountain Craft School.

We are lucky to have such talent among the fiber artists here in Prescott, Arizona.

Vintage Buttons and Kahlua Beads - Off Loom Bead Weaving

"Kahlua Clover"

I began this piece with this 1 1/2 inch Clover Vintage Button using Peyote Stitch and adorning it with a small Vintage German Button and rows of loops with beads.

Recycled Kahlua Bottle Glass was lamp-worked into beads for this Brooch.

This brooch along with several others can be found at Arts Prescott Cooperative Gallery, 134 S. Montezuma St. on Historical Whiskey Row, in Prescott, Arizona.

Nearly all of my brooches are created with the pin attached in a vertical fashion. This enables you to wear it as a pendant as well.

The Bead Museum Exhibit-The Measure of Man in a Head-Taking Land

The Bead Museum in Glendale, Arizona writes,

Poker-Work Decoration Among the Nagas

Naga tribes create stylized designs incorporating dots and geometric figures in body tattoos and chank shell decoration.  Learn about the symbolism of the dot designs and make a necklace using glass beads and decorated shell pendants.

 

Of Man and Beast

Much Naga adornment reflects the relationship and respect the Naga have for other creatures that inhabit their world.  Explore the animal derived materials (horn, hair, feathers, claws, teeth, hair, etc.) that make Naga adornment so powerful and make a necklace from feathers, animal charms and glass beads.

  

Naga Identity Through Textiles

Textiles play an important role in Naga ethnic identity as well as displaying status.  Discover how fabric designs are created and uncover the unique meanings attached to different designs and materials.  Decorate a sash belt using paint, stamped designs and cowrie shells.

Lampwork Recycled Kahlua Off Loom Bead Weaving Necklace

  Ornate Kahlua Lampwork Beads are through out this off loom bead weaving piece.

The pendant is encased in Brick Stitch and Fresh Water Pearls begin to create the rest of the necklace.

Baltic Amber and Bulls Eye Agate Beads are also among the Kahlua Lampwork.

Branch Stitch is interwoven within the Kahlua Ornate Lampwork Beads.

This piece was created several years along and it will be worn by Wilda Postal during the Mountain Spinners and Weavers Guild Fashion Show in November 2008.  Wilda was one of the first Prescott residents to own one of my larger Recycled Lampwork pieces. She wears it well.

"Sisterhood of Spinning Tales", a fiber art show with these local  Fiber Artists will be showing at the gallery  daily from 10am to 6pm through October 14, 2008

During this Arts Prescott Guest Artist Show you will find many colors of Hand Spun Yarns. These skeins will inspire you to create something special for yourself.

During the Artist Reception which takes place during the 4th Friday Art Walk you will meet all of the fiber artists and they will share their fiber creativity with you. The fiber artists will host their reception. While enjoying refreshments you will be able to touch all of the wonderful fiber art and find out how it was created at the same time.

While the show is up which is through October 14th you might even drop by while one of the spinners are at the gallery with their wheel spinning for you and the show. This will be a spontanious periodical event and not planned.

If you miss the spinning  and you wish to see a demo call 928-899-3574 and Rowena will arrange for someone to be at the gallery spinning for you or a group you wish to bring along to see the show.

Each Fiber artist spins with a different spinning wheel and it is interesting to watch as they work.

This show is great for the fall season and the holiday shopping list.

Raggedy Ro Hand Spun was used to weave this Tri-Loom piece which will be part of the fiber show. Under the Raggedy Ro you can see the hand spun skeins of various wonderful fibers. Cashmere, Merino Wool, Alpaca and of course, Black Diamond Bamboo.

Gourd Artist Creates Pendants-Maureen Hawthorn

Arts Prescott Cooperative Gallery is proud to introduce their newest addition to the gallery...Maureen Hawthorn.

Maureen writes, "Fresh from the vine, hard shell gourds are 90% water. After drying for about one year, gourds are as durable as wood. During the drying process the gourds develop a thick coast of mold and mildew, which requires a lot of elbow-grease to remove".

Here in just one of Maureen's Gourd Pendants. These small treasures are a must see at the gallery.

Maureen continues, "An Ex-acto knife or mini jigsaw is used to cut the gourd open to create either a lid or open-work. Now the seed and lining can be removed with a sturdy scraper and finishing with sandpaper. A gourd's shape and size determines its transformation. The amount of time to layout a design depends upon the size of the gourd and the intricacy of the design. I then burn the design into the gourd with a wood-burning tip, otherwise know as pyrography. Next I paint thin layers of color and then gradually build subsequent layers of paint, pigments or dyes until I achieve the desired color density over the design areas of the surface".
 Here is a close up of one of the gourd ornaments on Maureen Hawthorn's Ornament tree pictured above.

Maureen uses embellishing techniques such as teneriffe weaving with Irish Waxed Linen in the cut-out area of her gourds. Some of the gourd rims have pine needle weaving and others bead work, leather or even feathers.

Recycled Glass Pendant - Peyote Stitch Off Loom Bead Weaving

This piece was lamp-worked using a glass scard from Cindy Meyer's hand blown glass.

Vintage button and off loom bead weaving adorn this piece.

The cluster of beads on both sides accent the lamp-work pendant. One large Chardonnay Recycled Glass Drop is among the off loom bead weaving.

Tucson, Arizona - Beads of Courage - Sonoran Glass Art Academy

Tucson's Sonoran Glass Art Academy bead-a-thon is a fundraising event to support Beads of Courage. Both Tucson based non-profits are working together to provide Arts-in-Medicine.
