Maureen created the fairies for a friend to show at a Renaissance Festival after her friend saw her play and create fairies with here granddaughter.
Maureen shares how she created her fairies.
"BODIES: Armature formed with some plain craft wire.
After completing the form I tore strips of white muslin fabric and wrapped the
wire armature. Once I was satisfied with their body shape I took a paint brush
and added a wash of color (watered down acrylic paint) to the muslin. I
believe I tea stained a few and dusted with a little chalk. The idea in mind
was to age them.
"HEADS & HANDS: Shaped onto the wire w/ polymer clay. This step completed
before wrapping the body with the fabric. Some of the heads and hands were oval
shaped wooden beads which slid right onto the wire. Hand painted face detail and
sealed w/polyurethane."
"CLOTHES: White muslin fabric painted with silk paint and randomly sprinkled
w/ glitter. After the paint dried I sprayed on some fabric stiffener to help
with shaping and dimension. I cut out various leaf and petal shapes to make
their outfits. Shapes for clothes are mostly layered onto the bodies w/ fabric
glue. HAIR: Combed out some yarn, wrapped around toothpicks like ringlets and
saturated with fabric stiffener (or) some of the hair is simply cotton
embroidery thread. WINGS: Cut out of soft deerskin leather and painted
details. EMBELLISHMENT added with beadwork belts, various fibers, grasses
picked in the yard, beaded garlands in their hair, tiny bracelets, purses &
necklace, etc. The little fairies measured about 4 inches tall when complete.
I have to admit they were quite laborious, but lots of fun!"
