Come work with felting artist and storyteller, Sharon McFeely, to create a hand felted garden/wilderness tapestry. As we work together we will hear and perhaps share stories about our favorite gardens, gardeners, encounters with people and animals in the tame and not so tame places, where moods of awe, reverence and connectedness with nature lift us into a holy place. These places are where our senses are invoked; through fragrances, light and shadow, color, geometry, the sense of life growing, maturing, dying, the sounds of rustling leaves or children playing. Your finished piece will be a work of art and can be used as a wall hanging or as a table runner. Those new to felting are warmly invited.
Felting is an ancient art form using wool fleece that is laid out in layers and patterns, a new tool, a felting needle, is used to tap layers loosely into place, then we use warm water and mild soap to ‘felt’ the fibers firmly together, resulting in the creation of a beautiful fabric. Felt was the first fabric created by human beings. Before our ancestors learned how to weave and sew or to knit fabric, they learned how to felt rugs, hats, clothing, boots and even coverings for home dwellings called yurts. Felting in now being re-discovered as a beautiful and satisfying art and craft in the U.S., Europe and Japan. It continues on in parts of Asia and the Nordic countries, two of its places of origin. Bring two old towels, all other materials will be provided. Bring lunch or a snack.
