The Stolen Beads

While crusing the many blogs on "TypePad" I ran across http://mrsmartinsquiltshop.typepad.com/    

Mrs. Martin had a great piece in her blog called "The Stolen Quilt" What a great idea. She wrote:  "If by chance the person who took Sue's quilt from my shop reads this entry and has an attack of the guilts, please feel free to pop it in a bag and hang it up at the back door."

That brought me to The Stolen Beads blog day. I blogged on this once before but I thought this was just a perfect way to ask whoever walked out of the gallery in Prescott with my Blue and White Beads do the same. These beads were actually some of the first beads I ever created and I was short on bead inventory and decided to put this piece in my case. Needless to say it walked out the door. So.... if by chance the person who took Rowena's "Prescott Blue" from the gallery reads this entry and has an attach of the guilts, please feel free to pop it in a bag and hang it near my case.

Thank you Mrs. Martin for this great idea.

Also, if you have done any bead making or quilting you know how much time it takes to finish a piece. If someone walks out the door without buying the piece it is like if they worked a week or two and would not get paid for their work. I guess that is the way you need to look at it.

Bisbee, Arizona -- Haven of Beads and Art - Tucson on the Way Home to Prescott

The town of Bisbee, Arizona! Check out the B Mountain. Along the sidewalks of this Southern Arizona town you will find beads, iron art, pottery and one-of-a-kind jewelry.

To the right the necklaces and ear rings created from Basketry Art. I could not pass this up and if anyone knows the name of the artist who created these pieces in the window of one of these historic buildings let me know. I wanted to go in and check out all of this artists work but the shop was not open at the hour we were in town.

The area around Tucson isn't bad either. Check out the mountains behind our Hotel.

Triangle Frame Loom Weaving with Raggedy RO

The Triangle Frame Loom Stand allows you to place the loom at several heights which makes the weaving more comfortable. In this photo you can see that I have woven over 1/2 of the shawl. Each row I add creates a warp thread and 4 weft threads.

While learning to weave with this loom I made several mistakes. I didn't weave the loop going down which created only one row to move over to the other side of the weaving and the loop on the top did not weave into the piece. I soon realized my mistake and corrected it.

Also, I doubled my woolen hand spun Raggedy RO to create a thicker yarn. Raggedy RO is my signature Yarn.

Designing with other yarns will be interesting. Spriggs offers an on line information sheet with suggested yarns to use which allows your design to do what you want. You find several patterns to give you ideas what you can weave with this Frame Loom. The chart has a yardage information sheet!

I have the Oak Frame. The loom comes in several types of wood. To the right you see the brand on the back of the frame to assure you that this is a Carol Leigh design.

Spriggs Adjustable Traiangle Frame Loom

This Tri-Loom is a Spriggs Adjustable Triangle Frame Loom of Carol Leigh's Hillcreek Fiber Studio in Columbia, MO.

Carol describes this loom as "The Smart Loom, the only loom that dresses itself!"

All of the warping and weaving is done simultaneously and with only a single strand of yarn. You can double the strands for design or thickness.

You add the first two rows and then you just weave a loom down from the top of the loom and spread the loop apart. Each woven loop gives you two wefts woven at once.

Check back for more on the Tri-Loom after I get started using my Raggedy Ro hand spun yarn. I will begin making a triangle shaped shawl.

Merlot, Of Course - Recycled Wine Bottle Glass

"Merlot, Of Course" - This necklace is created from recycled Merlot Wine bottle glass. It has a Sterling Silver clasp and Delica Seed Beads off loom bead woven on the pendant. You are not able to see the reverse side of the pendant which is consumed with fresh water pearls and seed beads.

This Merlot necklace is being worn and I hope enjoyed somewhere in the world. It was purchased one day at Arts Prescott Cooperative Gallery on Whiskey Row in Prescott, Arizona.

"Loves Chardonnay, Loves to Dance" -- On your left is a Chardonnay piece with European Buttons added.

Note the 2 hollow beads included in this piece. Hollow beads make the piece lighter and also more interesting with the bead showing more depth in the glass.

What fun it is to wear the bottle you enjoyed during a special dinner or occasion.

These pieces can be handed down from generation to generation and they are all one-of-a-kind art to wear pieces.

I have had many send a bottle or chards of one and request a special piece. What I do in that case is create several pieces of jewelry and then they pick what fits their pocket book and their taste. The rest of the beads go into the gallery for others to enjoy.

More About the Fiber Amulet Bag

After writing about the Fiber Amulet Bag I got a comment from Carrie talking about how this bag would be a great way to use her hand spun yarns. Oh Yes! You can not only use your hand spun but you can also use the roving to weave with on its own. This makes an interesting accent to the bag.

You can use these small fiber bags to carry your favorite charms or collect beads and charms along with buttons you find on all of your journey's through the world. Wear them on your bag. It is like carrying memories around your neck.

I was inspired by learning Off-Loom Bead Weaving years ago. First I began with the Beaded Amulet Bag.

When I discovered the Harrisville Lap Loom I began playing around with the idea of carrying my beads on my favorite yarns. I learned how to spin and then went crazy with ideas. I looked all over the net after I created and sold my bag adorning them with my beads. I had so many orders that I purchased some ready made bags and recreated them by adding my hand spun yarns to them and then my beads. After weaving numerous bags I created my first knitted kit with Southwest Trading Company and continued to teach the lap loom weaving and adorning of the bag at Studio Three here in town.

After the purchase a Baby Wolf by Schacht and turned to weaving my fiber amulet bags using tubular double weave. Schacht is made here in the Denver, Colorado. I have to give credit where credit is due when I say I first learned to weave and spin at Studio Three which was taught by Carma Koester. One of the best classes was the double weave class!

This is in the Bodenstein Collection, Tatham Art Gallery Pietemaritzburg, South Africa and the photo was taken by Kirsten Nieser. I got this information through a press release. Recently, I ran across "Latte" Fiber to spin. It spins like butter or should I say Soy Silk®. They both are not the easiest fibers to spin.

The Town of Tombstone, Arizona - Buttons, Rugs and Buffalo

Travel to Tombstone, Arizona and you walk back in time -- back to the Wild West.

The shopping isn't bad either. I loved the old wooden side walks and not watching out for cars on the main shopping streets.

The Red Buffalo is great! Old time hats and the Hand Woven Rugs are hanging on the walls along with everything you can imagine regarding Buffalo.

I asked the shop keeper if she had Buffalo Fiber for Spinning and she was surprised that everyone is spinning it today. That would be a great asset to her Buffalo Collection. I buy my Buffalo Fiber from Loom N Essence in Sedona, Arizona.

At The Shady Lady's Closet  I found all types of clothing remodeled after the 1800's.

These wonderful Stone Buttons were purched in Red Buffalo Trading Co.

 

The Bead Museum Two Recent Activities-Summer Camp and Silver From Fetish to Fashion

I do not have photos of  The Bead Museum today, but I promise that I will take some next time I am in Glendale. This piece in the photo is one of my "Loves Chardonnay, Loves to Dance" created using recycled wine bottle glass and off loom bead weaving. I first learned off loom bead weaving at The Bead Museum.

"Flowers, Seeds & Bugs in Beads" is our ½ day summer camp. Offered on June 6 or June 20 from 9-noon. Ages 8-12. $50 Members, $85 non-Members. Kids will explore their natural environment as they learn how beads are created from nature.

Elizabeth II by Ashford

Elizabeth II by Ashford is a Saxony Wheel.

The wheel itself is 25 inches in diameter and this wheel has ball bearings as does all of the Majacraft wheels. This is the rear view of the Elizabeth II.

I will be using this wheel for the next few weeks because it is a single treadle and I hurt my one knee. Many spinners spin with one foot even if they are spinning on a double treadle wheel.

Antique Weaving Shuttles

During my first weaving class I checked often on eBay for great deals!

I found these Antique Weaving Shuttles. They arrived dirty and appeared unusable. My husband cleaned them up and they are now hanging in our living room next to our 100 year old German Oak Schrank.

Note the copper piece holding the shuttles together. It is now polished. The shuttles are rather large and beautiful.

The bobbins were purchase at Harrisville Weaving. If you get a chance to look at the Harrisville building on line do it, because it is worth checking out.

On the right is another set of Antique Shuttles I found on eBay. They have been cleaned up and they are now hanging next to our antique clock.

Antique Shuttles make great wall hangings and I enjoy them very much.

Fiber Amulet Bags HandWoven-Adorned with Polymer Clay Beads, Lampwork and Seedbeads

                                These Fiber Amulet Bags were some of the first  bags I created using the Harisville Lap Loom A. The bags hand woven on the lap loom is sewn down the back so you can not see a seam and a cord is made with my Fringe Twister for the neck. Many different fringes are added. The thinner fringes are corded. Each fringe is beaded for adornment. I like to add a thicker Silk Ribbon for one of the fringes.

The "RED SEDONA" on the right has red and black SWTC Bambo yarn found in many fiber shops. Most all of the Red bag is created with SWTC Yarns as well as Harrisville yarn.

"Prescott Purple Sunset" is created from the first yarns I purchased at Studio Three here in Prescott. I also purchased my first Harrisville Lap Loom at that time.

Today I use most of my Hand Spun Yarns for my Fiber Amulet Bags. Check out the book "Plucky Fluff" for directions on how to make some wild Hand Spun Novelity Yarn.

These bags are perfect for Polymer Clay Beads, Lampwork Beads, Wooden Beads and of course the basic seed beads.

Judith Skinner - Wyoming from Prescott - Hope She Returns Soon

Today we enjoyed a wonderful afternoon with Judith Skinner in her Prescott Cabin in the Pines. Walk into the living area and the sun shines on the pioneer fireplace. If it were winter we could roast marsh mellows!

Judith Skinner, Polymer Clay Artist and founder of the Skinner Blend has enjoyed her time in Prescott, showing her work at Arts Prescott and the Jerome Artist Cooperative. Both galleries will miss Judith very much and we wish her all of the best in her future home. .

To the right you see Judith Skinner and Michelle Johnson at the food table during Judith's last get together with the group in Prescott. Judith's cabin brings warmth to the group!

Mary Kaye O'Neil, Silversmith and an active member of the Prescott Community enjoys talking with Bill Ooms, one of Prescott's Greatest Wood Turner and Patti Ortiz, Painter and one of the founders of the 4th Dimension Art Walk here in Prescott.

Judith's get together would not be the same without painter Carolyn Schmitz on the left on the coach. Carolyn shows her work at Van Gogh's Ear on Whiskey Row. In the middle is Carolyn Peterson and her husband Dave. Carolyn is a painter, and her paintings, mono-types and greeting cards are found in Arts Prescott Cooperative Gallery. Dave drops in the gallery now and then to say hello.

Michelle is a featured Basket Maker at Arts Prescott Cooperative Gallery. Michelle is also an active Mountain Spinners and Weavers Guild member and she and Tom raise sheep, lama, and other critters. FIBER!

Pam and Bill Ooms travel in their RV and enjoy retirement as well as several great Art Shows a year. Bill is on the cover of a recent Wood Turning Magazine and he has promised to list some of the shows you can visit to see his work. Pam has been taking up wire work jewelry along with all of her other hobbies.

Beaded Mask for Wall Adornment

Wall Adornment Bead Mask.

Simply visit your Greenware Shop and check out the masks they have available. Be sure and paint it your color of choice. The reverse side will be as attractive as the front. Have your mask fired there at the shop. If you do not have it fired it will crack and break with time or even while you are working on it. The longevity depends on this step of the process. I did not have my first mask fired and it began to crumble apart. I thought the glue and the beads would be enough to hold it together and of course that was my first mistake doing this project.

Find your favorite glue. I like E-6000 and begin applying your beads to the mask. Be sure and do this project in a well ventilated room.

Normally, I like to glue several beads to the mask, leave them dry. In a few hours return to your project and glue more beads to the mask. It is easiest to begin in one focal area and work from there.

Also, this is the project to use broken lampwork beads you cannot use in for other project. Collect such beads in a bowl for these types of projects.

I have a round plastic electric wall clock in my bead studio with the frame of the clock beaded with the glue method. Enjoy this project.

Jensen Spinning Wheel with Whorls and Bobbin Holder

                                                                                        Loving Spinning Wheels comes along with Fiber Art. I have several types of wheels manufactured all over the world.

This Jensen Saxony Wheel is the wheel I purchased at the Retzlauf Winery during the Spin In 2006. It came with 3 Whorls and two were mounted on the back of the Mother of All. I purchased the 3 smaller whorls from Bountiful. The whorls are only sold new in Cherry Wood so you can see the 3 smaller whorls are a bit darker.

The Jensen wheels are created in Cherry Wood today. This Saxony was created in 1993 during the time Jensen used Oak Wood as well as Cherry wood. All of the Jensen Spinning Wheels are signed by the maker under the Mother of All with the date the wheel was created.

You can also see part of the bobbin holders added by Willard Taylor from Martinez, California. Will and Kate Campbell Taylor put together the Spin In at the Retzlauf Winery each year. This year it is June 2nd and I will be attending along with long time friend Glenda Campbell. We will drive my new Hybrid so the trip should be a lot of fun.  Guilds from all over Northern California will be attending.  Look for some wonderful photos on my return.
