Prescott Hometown Gallery Celebrates with New Artist Members

Front Arts Prescott.jpg HOMETOWN GALLERY CELEBRATES 14TH  ANNIVERSARY

Arts Prescott Gallery, a co-operative gallery of local artists, is
celebrating its 14th anniversary.  This hometown gallery, in the heart of
Whiskey Row, has added some new members:

Brenda Behrens is a wood turner and carver who began studying  her art in Japan in the early 60's.  She is widely published in magazines  and newspapers around the world.  Her woodcarvings developed into the  portraying of flowers and plant life into the surface of the wood.  She is  now carving vessels and sculptures of various sizes and dimensions.

Robert Hughes creates functional and decorative pottery pieces  which are inspired by nature, mainly the Southwest desert. He begins a piece with a lump of clay and an idea and all the pieces are hand-thrown, hand-built, or a combination of the two.    He designs all his own glazes and uses a variety of techniques he has learned over the years.

Don Rantz, pastel artist, has bright contemplative landscapes, which show an appreciation and an understanding of the wide-open spaces of the American  Southwest. The careful harmony Rantz renders between the warms of the sandy  soils and the cools of the clear air welcomes viewers into his paintings,
but it's the strong compositions that hold them there.  Don has won many  awards for his works of art.

Born and raised in Southern California, Raina Gentry, a former rock-climbing  instructor, studied printmaking, life drawing, collage and painting,  incorporates each of these into her compositions.  With various media she  creates her paintings with a focus on the human form, Intuitively, without
structure or knowing what her final outcome will be.  She uses a great deal of complex layering.

The gallery, located at 134 S. Montezuma, is open seven days a week from 10  to 6. Check on Guest Artist Shows at the gallery at 928-776-7717.

Gallerymain_r3_c2

http://www.pebbleinthepondartstudio.com/gallery.htm

This year the Mountain Spinners and Weavers brought Brecia Kralovic-Logan to Prescott to teach Creative Knitting and Knitting with Silk Strips. Brecia calls her Fiber Art Site: pebble in the pond art studio.

Several people have asked for her contact information and her it is once again. These photos are taken from her site. If you have a chance to contact Brecia and take a class in Creative knitting you will enjoy this knitting process very much.

I am sure that the photo above comes from her "Strip Tease" Knitting with Silk Fabric one day workshop. Brecia uses silk strips of fabric for knitting ans also teaches how to dye batches of silk to use in this knitting process. http://www.pebbleinthepondartstudio.com/contact.htm

Soon I will have several of my creative knitting projects finished and on my blog. I am spinning, knitting and weaving to get ready for our "Sisterhood of Spinning Tales" show at Arts Prescott Cooperative Gallery, 134 S. Montezuma Street - Heart of Whiskey Row in Prescott. This Fall show will be a must see.

Flat Peyote Stitch Cuff With Kahlua Lampwork

Kahlua Beaded Cuff.jpg Flat Peyote Stitch is used often while making Seed Bead Cuffs.

This piece has a Focal Bead created with a Lampwork Pendant of Recycled Kahlua Bottle Glass. Note the fresh water pearls clustered in the off loom bead weaving. An Agate Stone Circle Bead adorns the Kahlua pendant.

Some Stitch in the Ditch Seed Beads help give the cuff more stability.

Cuffback The Closure is actually two Bakelite Buttons which were found at a Prescott Antique Shop.   Loops are created using a Ladder Stitch to fit your wrist.

Knitting Needles Made Using Milk - Age Old Technique

Swallowknit Casein Knitting Needles At the last Fiber Show I was shopping at Loom N Essence. Sharon had knitting needles made from milk. I asked about this and Sharon told me that the manufacture of the needles used casein, a milk protein. The milk is acidified with the addition of rennet, the curd is separated from the whey, dried at extremely high temperatures turning it into a granulated powder.

With the casein derived totally from natural products this makes them biodegradable, non-static, fast, smooth and noiseless when knitting.

This age old technique is environmentally and ergonomically friendly. Casein is light, and warm, with flexibility which is a benefit for knitters with strain injuries or arthritis.  Using natural fibers and natural tools for knitting is preserving and industry with a heritage and securing its link to the past  writes the Swallow Company. They create these wonderful "back to nature" knitting needles.

You can check out these needles at: www.loomnessence.net

The Limited Roberta Electronic Spinner by Ertoel

Limited_edition_roberta_e_mail_atta Australia is the home of many beautiful Spinning Wheels and the Roberta Electronic Spinner is just one.

This light wood Roberta is "The Limited Edition". Ertoel makes these spinners on special order and it takes some waiting time to get one. I have one in stock now. There are only about 12 Limited Editions in the United States at this time. Roberta_1

Each Roberta Electronic Spinner has it's own look. The Roberta comes with a wonderful Mahogany Color and it fits in everyone's living room, hobby room or just about anywhere.

This Electronic Spinner was originally created for spinners with problems with there knees or feet. These problems made it difficult to spin and Ertoel created the Roberta Electronic Spinner to solve the problem. Today, many have a Roberta along with their other spinning wheels. Some just use it to ply with and others use it as their production wheel. I use it most of the time and my other wheels come out for demonstrations for Folks Fests and, of course, the Sharlot Hall Museum here in Prescott. We have a group spinning every Monday from 10 to 2 there. I try to join them any time I can, because the group is fun.

If you ever just want to try the Roberta e-mail me. Also, anyone who ends up with their own Roberta I set a spinning afternoon just to spin with them and give them all of my tips to spin the best with the Roberta Electronic Spinner.

Sharon McFeely - Garden and Wilderness Tapestries

Wilderness_tapestries_2 Come work with felting artist and storyteller, Sharon McFeely, to create a hand felted garden/wilderness tapestry. As we work together we will hear and perhaps share stories about our favorite gardens, gardeners, encounters with people and animals in the tame and not so tame places, where moods of awe, reverence and connectedness with nature lift us into a holy place.   These places are where our senses are invoked; through fragrances, light and shadow, color, geometry, the sense of life growing, maturing, dying, the sounds of rustling leaves or children playing.  Your finished piece will be a work of art and can be used as a wall hanging or as a table runner.  Those new to felting are warmly invited.

Felted_sun_flower_2  Felting is an ancient art form using wool fleece that is laid out in layers and patterns, a new tool, a felting needle, is used to tap layers loosely into place, then we use warm water and mild soap to ‘felt’ the fibers firmly together, resulting in the creation of a beautiful fabric.  Felt was the first fabric created by human beings. Before our ancestors learned how to weave and sew or to knit fabric, they learned how to felt rugs, hats, clothing, boots and even coverings for home dwellings called yurts. Felting in now being re-discovered as a beautiful and satisfying art and craft in the U.S., Europe and Japan. It continues on in parts of Asia and the Nordic countries, two of its places of origin.  Bring two old towels, all other materials will be provided. Bring lunch or a snack.

Roberta Standard Bobbin on Ebay - Great to Promote Yourself - Great Press

Robertaelectronicspinnerbobbin I love to share my ideas to promote your art or your small business. Recently, I became a dealer for the Roberta Electronic Spinner. I did this because I believe in the spinner and I love to spin with Roberta. The Hand Spun is abundant using Roberta.

As most of you know I do a lot of PR for the Gallery and several non-profit organizations. I have learned that anytime you get your name out there is a good thing.

Ebay is a great source to get information out to the public. I don't use Ebay to run my business, but I do like to add a few things each week with information about what I have to offer and then add all of my contact information about my, blog, web site and my web store. It is amazing how much PR this allows you to have each week for a small amount of money. Pictured is a Standard Size bobbin for the Roberta Electronic Spinner found at: www.rowenaart.net/store

This week I have a standard Size Roberta Bobbin on eBay along with some Black Diamond Fiber and several other things. My soft ware to show the hits on my blog and store coming from eBay shows me that this is one way to get the attention of the public.

Also, sharing ideas on my blog is just the right thing to do. I believe when you help another business your business is also enriched. I love to see my information help a new spinner to begin with this wonderful hobby.

Prescott Mile High Middle School Dedicates Safe Routes Mural

Prescott_mural_painting Prescott Mile High Middle School staff and students, will join with Prescott Alternative Transportation (PAT), The Prescott Downtown Mural Project(PDMP)and honored guests, to dedicate the
school’s new mural. On Thursday May 15, beginning at 2:00PM, Principal Joe Howard (and the Mile High Jazz band) will
introduce those who organized this unique project to encourage the time honored tradition of students walking and biking to school along with the important role the community plays in placing its own public art.

Mural project directors, known as the 'Mural Mice', R.E. Wall and Margaret Dewar will present on the process of helping students turn their ideas into a school mural.Mile_high_school_students

Mile High Art Teacher Amanda Chartier, PAT’s executive Director Lisa Barnes, and Safe Routes to Schools Program Coordinator Paul Katan will all speak about this Safe Routes encouragement activity.

Prescott City and School District officials will also speak at this dedication.

The Prescott Downtown Mural Project was contracted by PAT to implement the student driven mural.
The PDMP was selected because of their experience in working with students, their focus on community murals, and their inclusive process.

Prescott Alternative Transportation, the local Safe Routes to Schools program provider, administered the mural as a part of their work to increase the number of kids walking and riding bikes to school and making it safer to do so. The national SRTS program was established to address the issues of childhood obesity (and other health issues arising from inactivity) environmental pollution, and increasing traffic, by helping more kids ride bikes and walk to school safely.

PAT was just awarded $44,282 from ADOT for their application to administer Safe Routes to

Prescott schools during the 2008-2009 academic year.

Will Taylor's Clever Kate - Retzlaff Winery - Another Year of Spinning at the Winery!

Will_taylors_cleaver_kate Recently, I acquired a Will Taylor's Cleaver Kate. Will created this the morning I was staying there in the bay area at Will and Kate's home for the "Spinning at the Winery" one year.

The Treadles with Threads Spinning and Weaving Guild had just had a great spinning class taught by Judith MacKenzie-McCune. Judith voiced what she liked in a Lazy Kate. The Kate needed to be easy to travel with. Judith and Will put their heads together and came up with "Clever Kate".

Oak_cleaver_kate

During the recent show in Tucson, "Fibers Through Time 2008", I purchased this Will Taylor Clever Kate to go with my Jensen Saxony Spinning Wheel.

You can see that the Kate has a special place to store the brass bobbin holders. This makes it perfect to travel or just to store away when needed.

Lazy_kate_clever_kate Spinning at the Winery is coming up at the end of this month and I am so sad that I will be unable to attend this year. Have Fun at the Winery!!!!

Check how much fun I had last year at the Retzlaff Winery in Livermore, California. A blog is fun. It is like going back in time.

http://rowenablog.typepad.com/rowena_bead_and_fiber/2007/06/spinning_at_the.html

Jensen_saxony_and_cleaver_kate

In 2007, I brought home this Oak Jenson Saxony Wheel. I love the wheel and it resides in our living room. The extra bobbin which some how found its way onto my wheel belongs to my Majacraft Suzi Spinning Wheel. I just noticed it myself. I love the wooden Majacraft Bobbins.

Will Taylor's Clever Kate dresses up my Saxony and the biggest thing is I love using it. Will pays attention to details when he is working on his spinning tools and toys.

May 31st. Fleeces, Food & Fun: 10:AM-4:PM  "Bring your wheel for spinning and a pot-luck dish to share for lunch.  Don’t spin yet?  Join the “Try it Out Circle” for those who would like to learn.  We love knitters!  Get your first pick of prize-winning fleeces before the “Black Sheep Gathering”.  Bring your own water, but please buy your sodas and wine from the winery.  Entry fee $5.00".

Crayon Box Jacket - Beads - Patricia Brockert and Dian Moore

Patricia_brockert_jacket The Crayon Box Jacket is still a favorite of mine. This knitted pattern written by Christine Bylsma allows the knitter to design the squares with their favorite colors, texture, and types of yarns.

The black tone knitted jacket was created by Patricia Brockert.Eye_beads_2 She added beads knitting them into the squares randomly. Here at the shoulder you see two eye beads. These black and Whites called Skunk Beads are a favorite of bead Cuffcollectors.

At the cuff Patricia added White Hearts. These White Hearts are red lampwork beads with a layer of white glass in the center.

Black Eye Lash Yarn was added around the cuffs, neck and front of this Crayon Jacket.

Elesssweaterfront Dian Moore knitted the same Bylsma Pattern using Pastels. Dian is a beader, fiber artist and quilter. She is a founding member of the High Desert Bead Society here in Prescott.

Check Dian's blog for more fiber and bead creations.

Electronic Spinning Wheel - The Roberta - Spinning Cotton

Roberta_electronic_spinner_spins__2 After the class on Spinning with Cotton by Joan Ruane I came home and immediately began spinning Cotton with my Roberta. Roberta is an Electronic Spinner, as most of you know. Spinning with the Roberta allows my hand spun to be abundant for all of my newly planned projects.

The main thing to remember while spinning with cotton is learn your long draw. I find myself using the long draw spinning with the Roberta even while spinning with Merino.

The flyer on the Roberta has one movable hook and an O-Ring. I move the O-Ring one roll when I wish to continue an even spun bobbin. It is easy and smooth to do by just stepping on my foot pause control, move the O-Ring and spinning once again by removing my foot from the pause control. If you do not have a pause control attachment on your Spinner you can just turn the stitch to off.

The Roberta is a bobbin driven spinner with an Irish Brake Tension. The speed adjustment knob determines the rate of twist and if I need more pull in rate, I adjust the Irish Brake Tension. This smooth spinning creates such even and nicely spun cotton. Of course, Roberta is great for plying cotton and all other fibers.

Note my Mouse Pad on the bed of Roberta. It helps keep the wood on the Roberta in great shape. While changing bobbins or oiling the shaft of the flyer it is convenent to have the mouse pad in place to protect your Roberta from any scratches in the case you drop the flyer or bobbin. Also, it is nice to have a mouse pad with a photo of your favorite hand spun yarn or a beloved pet. I call this Roberta Adornment.

Keep the mouse pad clean with a spray or two of De-Solv-It. The De-Sov-It cleans away any trace of Ertoel Oil, which sometimes drops on the mouse pad. Having a clean and well cared for Spinner makes spinning more fun. Happy Spinning!

Weavezine.com - A Weaving Magazine

Nancy_alegria I opened my e-mail this week and read one from Loom N Essence. http://www.loomnessence.net/, Sharon Poplawski sent a link to this outstanding web weave magazine.

Sharing information among spinners and weavers makes this whole process more fun.

www.weavezine.com is a weaving magazine on-line and it is worth checking into. Nancy_alegria_warp_and_weft_yarn

This  scarf was created by Nancy Alegria. "Chocolate Mint Swirl" is created with naturally dyed yarns from Hand Jive Knits. Spring Green and Chocolate was used and that is where the name of this 8 shaft color-and-weave pinwheel twill came from. You will find more of this story and the pattern on www.weavezine.com

Katejantzkoprivnik Synemitchell The blue table runner was made by Kate Jantz.

The Red Wrap created by Syne Mitchell is also in the on-line weaving magazine.

Techniques such as Weaver-Manipulated Lace Weaves by Robyn Spady as well as designing with Turned-Weft Ikat by Bonnie Tarses is in this issue.

The one thing that I found that looks like it would be loved by many of our Prescott Fiber Artist is how to decorate your loom by William Koepp. Koepp writes, "It's been done by weavers for centuries. Look at photos and drawings of old looms, and you'll see carvings, inlays, stenciling and other embellishments."

I can't wait to hear your comments on this on-line weaving magazine! Happy Weaving!

Clay Cabochon Faces by Prescott Artist - Earth & Fiber Designs - Guest Artist Show at Arts Prescott

Brown_facejpg May 15, 2008 "Earth and Fiber In Harmony", will open at Arts Prescott Cooperative Gallery, 134 S. Montezuma - Heart of Whiskey Row.

Joanne Manginelli, clay and fiber artist integrates Pottery and Fiber.

Here is a brooch I created from one of Jo's Clay Face Cabochons. Jo will have several types of faces for Bead Designers to use in their work. It is always exciting to she what designers do with these faces.

A portion of the profits go to our local Firehouse to purchase oxygen masks that firefighters use to resuscitate pets.

Artist Reception will be May 23 from 6pm to 8pm.

Now, a little information about the cabochon. Wikipedia writes: "A cabochon or cabachon is a gemstone which has been shaped and polished as opposed to faceted. The resulting form is usually a convex top with a flat bottom. Cutting 'en cabochon' is usually applied to opaque gems, while faceting is usually applied to transparent stones."

Clay artist have taken up this cabochon form to create faces and objects for bead artists to create their jewelry. Some have holes in the top to use for a jump ring for making a simple pendant. Others have several holes for wire work artists.

Be sure and visit the show early enough to get a few for your collection. I have been talking about these pieces for some time.

See you at the reception!

A Day in Jerome, Beads, Fiber and Fun

Jerome_bead_and_fiber_rasberry_25 woman in one car traveling to Jerome to celebrate 2 birthdays. Here are the Birthday girls, Bernadette and Darlene. First stop Raspberry Bead Shop!

Darlene Brockert, one of Prescott's finest Real-estate Agents, drove all 5 of us up the hill for our day of shopping, fun and laughter. I haven't laughed that much in years.    Rowena_tank_and_patricia_brockert Beads and Fiber seemed to be the goal visiting most of the Jerome shops. In the next weeks I will feature some quilts and fiber from this day trip. I have a wealth of photos and stories.

A photo of me and my sister Patricia among the beads is nothing new. Shopping, beading, knitting and spinning seems to be things we like to do. What a good time in Jerome!

Jerome_fiber_and_quilts_2  Lunch was planned and we enjoyed The Grand Hotel tour at the same time. Trips were discussed and planned for the future. Our lunch at the Asylum at the Grand Hotel was, of course, fun and filled with laughs. Our waitress came from Heidelberg, Germany so we did get to speak a little bit of German between a glass of wine and lunch.

Jerome_bead_and_fiber_the_grand_hot

Jerome will never be the same and I must say we each did our bit for the economy. Gee, we haven't even gotten out checks in the mail yet. ....Another trip?

Bloody_mary_time_in_jerome What's a shopping trip without a Bloody Mary at the Jerome Bar. It felt like going back in time. Jerome_patricia_and_stella_3Patricia Brockert and Stella Broughton always smile when there are beads around. .

Fall Festival and Open Studio Tour in Prescott

Rowena_hand_spun

The Prescott Arts & Humanities Council

4th Annual Fall Festival & Studio Tour

Is Calling All…

Artists, Actors, Dancers, Musicians, Poets, Writers,

Theatre Groups, Museums, and Art Organizations!

On behalf of the Prescott Area Arts & Humanities Council it is my pleasure to invite you to apply for participation in our 4th Annual Fall Festival & Studio Tour.  The event will kick off on Friday, September 26th with the 4th Friday Art Walk and continue on Saturday, September 27th, and Sunday, September 28th, with artists demonstrations, music & dance performances, staged readings and more!  We expect that by scheduling the Fall Festival & Studio Tour during warmer weather that this will invite an even higher turn out than in previous years.

New this year will be a program guide that includes more detailed information on venues and demonstrations.  This is in addition to a brochure that includes a map to help patrons more easily plan for and navigate their tour.  Plans are in the works for collaboration with a state wide film festival, hot deals from local hotels for tourists, a fundraiser for art supplies for the Prescott Unified School District, and a very special sneak preview of artwork and participating venue events at a local restaurant or hotel.

This will be a highly publicized event.  And by pulling together multiple resources, we continue to offer this wonderful opportunity to market your artistic venue at a very low cost.   Plus there is an "Early Bird" deadline on May 15th that encourages early applicants by providing a discounted fee.  Participants who apply by the "Early Bird" deadline are also eligible for premium advertising space and are more likely to be featured in other promotional efforts. Additional deadline information is available in the attached application.  The application can also be downloaded from PAAHC's web site.  It will also be available by Monday online at www.prescottarts.com.

Participants are not required to be Prescott residents; however all venue locations must have a Prescott address.  In future years, consideration may be given to expanding the tour to a larger geographic area, but we do not feel this would benefit participating venues at this time.  Applications from venues that have not previously participated will be juried (details are included in the application).

We look forward to a very successful 2008 PAAHC Fall Festival & Studio Tour!
